Our head stylist, Irene Janzen, has put together her expert advice on how to improve the health of your hair!
Stop torturing yourself with beauty treatments the night before your big event!
Whether your getting ready for an upcoming milestone birthday or you RSVP’d “yes” to a beautiful summer wedding then getting ready in advance will cut stress from your already busy life and you will see amazing results in time for the big day!
If you want to work towards your beauty goal then keep reading…
HAIR HYDRATION – at least 5 weeks out.
If you think you can apply a hair treatment or mask on the night before and wake up with beautifully soft, shiny, hydrated hair…I hate to break it to you…but not going to happen. This takes time. Work hair treatments into your daily and/or weekly routine. Talk to your stylist about what hair treatments you can be using both daily and weekly. And talk to them about specific treatments then can apply in salon. This usually only costs about $12 and makes a HUGE difference to the way your hair looks and feels.
EYELASHES – 4 weeks out.
If you’re a lash extension newbie then make an appointment at least 4 weeks out from your big event to make sure you can tolerate them. The most important factor with lash extensions is comfort and they’re not for everybody. If you like them then upkeep is very simple and easy to do before your event.
Self Tanning – 3 weeks out.
Self tanning lotions are hard to apply. If this really isn’t for you then the week of your big event go and get a spray tan. There are some amazing all natural spray tanning studios that can actually benefit your skin when applied. If you’re applying a self tanner at home, start at least 3 weeks prior to your big event and use a tanner that build colour over time…and be patient! Choosing a gradual colour/self tanner is going to look the most natural and is a lot easier to apply.
SKIN – 3 weeks out.
Do you want glowing skin for your big event? We recommend getting an intense facial about 3 weeks before your big event and then a more gentle mask the week of. A gentle weekly face mask that we recommend is by doTERRA. Their natural mud face mask is amazing! If you have blemishes or a bit of a burn or other skin related issues you can try adding Tea Tree oil and Lavender essential oil to your daily moisturizer to heal. We use all doTERRA essential oils and are a certified retailer as well. Come in if you want to talk about that more!
Eyebrows – 1 week out.
Waxing can cause redness so to avoid looking like a lobster the day of the big event, schedule your eyebrow appointment 7 days out. This will let your skin calm down of any possible irritation or inflammation. If your skin is irritated apply some lavender essential oil.
Manicure – 2 days out.
Your manicure and pedicure always look their best up to a day or two after you leave the salon. I would recommend a gel polish to extend the wear of your polish. Also apply a cuticle and hand cream daily to extend the wear even more.
Lips – 1 day out.
Your lips deserve luxe treatments too! A lip scrub will do wonders for your lips a day before a big event. Your lipstick or gloss application will look a lot cleaner. I recommend a sugar lip scrub because it will help to dissolve and exfoliate dead skin. Your lipstick will go on smooth and clump free! I recommend using 2 tablespoons of raw organic sugar with a teaspoon of organic honey and a drop of lavender essential oil. You can even lick it off after…delicious!
Blonde hair can make a huge statement. And when you add some contrast you can make the look even cooler! That’s where the brow and hair mismatching combination comes in!
The blonde hair and dark eyebrow look is starting to get more and more popular because brows are a huge accessory statement to the face, wearing them full and bold. Contrasting brow to hair colour is a confidence boosting alternative to a natural, soft matched hair to brow.
You choose how edgy you want to make your look, whether you want a slight or drastic contrast. Going with a bold eyebrow look will make your eyes pop because bold brows will frame your eyes and people will be drawn to that area. Matching your brows to your hair could possibly give you a washed out look.
There are quite a few factors that determine what level of contrast is best for each person that sits in our chair. Factors such as skin tone, eye colour, eyebrow shape and fringe or bang are some things that contribute to the overall look. We suggest to take it slow and slightly increase the shade.
Here are some of our favourite looks!
We also suggest testing darker eyebrows and maintaining a beautifully bold brow with brow makeup tools. We recommend the Mirabella eyebrow products. Come into the salon for a brow consultation and application to learn what you can do with your eyebrows!
The Quick Brow Powder creates beautiful brows in only seconds! This product is a revolutionary new powder that sweeps on to instantly fill brows. It’s very easy to apply and stays put for long wear without any fallout. It has buildable coverage for a range of brow looks from natural to bold!
The Brow Pencil sculpts and fills in brows naturally with fine point precision pencil that won’t chip during application. The pencil glides on so smoothly for controlled lining with rich, blendable colour. It’s both smudge proof and waterproof that lasts all day long.
The Brow Shaper. Take charge of your brows with this all in one shaper that defines, grooms, fills gaps, and thickens brows! An easy sweep of the brush can perfect your brows. It’s a brow kit in a bottle!
What’s trending in Men’s Hair this New Year!
The Sexy Side-part
The High and Not-So Tight – Neat and tidy on the back and sides, and pure shining vibes on top
The Old Hollywood – Inspired by the past.
The Wavy Gentlemen – Lots of great waves without going overboard.
The Bulletproof Undercut – tight undercut with some length on top.
The Nice Guy Fade – stylish without going too drastic.
Texture on top – messing it up a bit.
There are two ways of looking at getting a new haircut, exciting…or completely terrifying. If you think you fit the terrified description then you’ve probably had long hair for as long as you can remember.
Have you heard about a “shock-proof haircut”? We’re going to tell you about it! It’s a selected cut that makes sense based on your current style and one that gives you the ability to re-create your everyday look.
While these haircuts we’re about to show you are notably shorter, they’re not jarring. You can still recreate the same styles as you did with your longer hair and get the same feeling.
If you have long chunky layers try a soft, A-line bob.
Layers can be a trap when you have long hair: Not only do they require a lot of styling to look good, but they can easily make you think you need length to pull off a lived-in, bedhead-y style. The solution? Bring up the length so the bottom layers live closer to the shortest layer, so it has a stronger perimeter line. You will still be able to get that messy, lived-in look.
For some people, the shorter the better. If you’re ready for the big chop, go all out and opt for an A-line. Ask your stylist to bring your length up an inch shorter in the back. When styled, you’ll be left with some face framing volume and an edgy, finished look.
Have your stylist chop off your long layers and leave the shorter ones. The result will be fairly low-shock, since you’ll be able to pull off the same styles.
If you have sleek, one-length hair, try a blunt bob with fringe.
A long, one-length cut is often the product of avoiding any kind of cut or trim, but it’s still one of the most striking ways to wear long hair. Therefore, you need something that will be just as show stopping to allow you to continue wearing your hair as your accessory.
You could play it safe with a lob, but a really sharp, straight bob with bangs is dramatic and beautiful. This cut will give you the same look-at-me effect as your long, swingy strands, while the bangs will give you that mysterious long-hair quality you love.
If you have long waves try a chin-length, A-line bob.
For many having long, beachy waves is all about feeling sexy. A textured cut that hits the chin will deliver that same feeling with even more volume.
This is for people who are ready for a big cut. The best way to wear it is with the waves tucked behind one ear. This cut shows how versatile and sexy a bob can be — with way less daily styling.
If you have long layers, try a soggy lob with a side swept fringe.
A shag will give you lots of movement and shape, which is the hallmark trait of a long cut with layers. This cut allows you to style your hair smooth and voluminous or with some texture spray for something more modern.
If all of these cuts are still scaring you, try a softly layered bob.
Still scared of the scissors? Don’t worry! The classic lob is the perfect transition to going shorter. The best thing about the lob is that it becomes a haircut and a style which means that it can be styled in any way and still feels fresh and modern. And, most importantly, you can still pull it into a ponytail or a bun. (And if for some reason you hate it, the grow-out process won’t be nearly as painful.)
Heck Yes! Balayage!
We’ve been on board with ombre hair and its many variations for a long time now we’re always on the look out for a new take on the trend. Have you heard one of our stylists talk about “balayage,” that’s when we suggest you perk up — it’s the hair color trend to try.
Balayage is o of the most searched words on google right now!
What is balayage?
Balayage is a French free-handed highlighting technique (be gone traditional foiling techniques) that will make you look perfectly sun-kissed, like a subtle, blended ombre. Who isn’t down for that?
The best part? It lets your stylist release her inner artist, so she can totally personalize the colours and placement for you.
You can achieve so many different effects from soft, natural highlights to something strong and punky. It’s super low maintenance too! Because of the way the colour is applied there won’t be a harsh line of regrowth.
Look at these gorgeous styles!
How it’s done.
The process varies depending on the length of your hair and your desired result. What you can usually expect is to have individual strands coloured with a brush. The strands chosen are determined by your stylist to create a super flattering look for you!
We find that all of our balayage clients are going for different looks and need to maintain those looks at different rates. Initially you may need multiple appointments to really build up your colour (colour takes time for happy, healthy hair!). If you’re going to extend your appointment because you like the way your regrowth is blending then we suggest coming in for a toner and a treatment to freshen up your colour in between appointments
Is it for me?
If you want more of a carefree colour, then this could be the look for your next appointment!
There are many different techniques that people use to create this look. It really depends on your hair type and colour history. If you’re seeing one of us we will be able to come up with a technique to achieve the look you desire that best suits your hair type and colour history. But it can take a few appointments because we want to do whats best for your hair.
There are certain hairstyles that show off balayage. I always love to see balayage finished with loose curls or a beachy, tousled look where you can see the colour variations ribbon through the hair. Sharp, strong haircuts like a bob require a stronger colour or a block colour to show off the cut. But balayage can be personalized by your stylist to work for you, that’s why its so amazing!
Summer isn’t totally over yet, but the trending fall cut styles have taken their place. Here are a range of styles that are super cool. There are blunt cuts, choppy bobs, short pixies, and soft mid length cuts. Many are heavily influenced by the shag but there is still so much variety within the trends. There are styles to suite every hair type.
Mid-Length Cut with Subtle Layers
Great cut for someone growing out a bob. Also great for someone with fine hair because cut makes hair look fuller. The cut is using more polished layers, making the layers soft for movement in the style.
Chin Length Bob with Fringe
This is a sharp bob that gives a lived in feel because of an even length with heavy bangs. The back is not graduated, its all one length. Less is more with this style because it only needs a rough blow dry when styling.
Blunt Asymmetrical Cut, Longer in the Front
Consider this the next gen A-line lob. The ends are blunt and it can be styled into so many different looks!
One-Length Bob with Well Blended Layering
This is the freshest way to wear a bob. This is a box bob with texturized layers that are used to create movement. This cut works for straight or wavy hair. When you style it, it works best to add texture and wave with a curling iron.
Mid-Length Shag, Seamless Layers & Long Bangs
A variation of the shag with super long bangs and a length that hits the collarbone. The cut works best with a natural wave in the hair.
Mid-Length Shag Cut with Lots of Layers
Another variation of the shag. Best for someone who wants an on-trend shag, but who is unsure about bangs. The cut pronounces the face with framing layers that bring texture and movement to the cut. Great for any hair style because it can be personalized to the characteristics of your hair.
This cut is awesome for someone who is not attached to long hair, obviously. The cut exaggerates your facial features.
Classic Undercut with a Long Top and Shorter Sides (my fav!)
This is a fresh take on a shorter cut. The hair is long enough to be slicked back. So its great for someone who is growing out a pixie or someone who wants shorter hair, but doesn’t want to go for the full pixie plunge. This is a super fun and versatile cut.
Long Blunt Cut with No Layering
Long hair with a fresh update, a blunt one length look. This is a very low maintenance look that works with any texture.
Textured Shag with Short Blunt Bangs
A cut that proves a quick way to add drama without sacrificing length. Great for an edgier look. Its all about a long shag cut with layers throughout and short, completely straight bangs.
Another Shag, this time with Wispy Bangs
A very sexy look with a sense of rock and roll, but beachy vibe. A layers shag with wispy bangs that are tapered and thicker on the sides.
What is Keratin?
– Keratin is a fibrous protein found naturally within the hair. In fact, the hair is mainly made up of Keratin associated proteins.
– Keratin acts as a protective shield against humidity which is the primary cause of frizz.
– Over time the hair loses Keratin from exposure to the sun, environmental factors, styling, and chemical services.
THE POWER OF KERATIN TREATMENT
Keratin Treatment is effective on all hair types. What it does is replenish lost Keratin and repair damage, it locks out humidity to reduce unwanted frizz, and gives the hair increased manageability alongside styling versatility. The treatment rebuilds strength, restores smoothness and elasticity, and gives hair a healthier appearance.
STRAIGHTENING VS SMOOTHING
Conventional straighteners and relaxers may break protein bonds in the hair structure which cause the strands to reform into a permanent straight shape.
Keratin technology doesn’t break hair’s bonds, it delivers smoother hair that can be styled wavy or straight. Keratin penetrates hair structure and it is then sealed within the cortex to repair damage.

If there is a time to switch up your hair its in the summer! We’ve put together some on trend looks that will help you survive the sweltering hot days that are about to come with low maintenance, sans hot tools, and super stylish colour! Here are some of the styles that work best for the summer season to get you out of your hair rut.
Braids: braids are in on every length of hair (even on men). Braiding short hair is the newest look. Any type of braid is in (fishtails, cornrows, french braids or regular braids). Anyone can do this look because it doesen’t have to be perfect. The undone look or distressed, messy organic braid is the look you want.
Short Hair: this is the buzz. If you want to make a statement, cut off all of your extra inches! To make even more of a statement with your short hair colour bombing is the way to go. Add a splash of pastel purple or pink, or go for a vivid magenta, blue or purple.
Hello Layers!: change up your BOB or add lots and lots of texture to your long hair. Lots of layers, texture & disconnections with your ends thinned out is this warm weather look. Goodbye BOB. Hello layers. Colour bombing or Ombre is still very popular for this cut, but the newest look is bayalage or contour colour around your face. This created a soft frame for your face.
Colour: whether you’re looking for a colour fling or the one!
Hair colour is getting warmer for the spring & summer. Darker roots fading out to beautiful warm shades, bronze, gold & copper tones with a colour bomb of red, mahogany & purple look amazing for this season.
I think that 95% of women and men have colour in their hair. Whether you’ve got a subtle shade to increase the vibrancy of your hair or if you are covering up unwanted grey hair or maybe you love to do something drastic and completely change your hair colour with each season. No matter the degree which we colour our hair, it needs nourishment in order to grow and to hang on to the hair colour.
So our #1 TIP for Colour Treated Hair is: CONDITIONING.
First of all, your hair does need to be washed in order to unclog your pores. You don’t just need to wash your hair for clean hair, but for a healthy scalp as well. You can compare it to washing your skin in order to unclog the pores on your face. A healthy scalp means healthy hair.
The most crucial step is the conditioner. This tones and moisturizes your scalp and hair. The conditioner keeps your hair nutrient rich. This not only keeps your hair strong, but it helps to hold the colour longer! A proper conditioner will help the vibrancy of your colour last and keep your hair soft. Thats why we think this minor investment is so important!
A healthy scalp means your hair will continue to grow. And stronger hair keeps your ends from breaking.
So you don’t need to be afraid to wash your hair and as a result turn to dry shampoo. If you use the right products you can wash your hair more often without compromising the colour.
We ALWAYS suggest going right to your stylist when looking to colour your hair and choosing products to use at home. I don’t know if I need to still say this, but stay away from box colour! Box colour is not healthy for your hair and it has unpredictable results both when you apply it AND the next time you have your hair coloured. It can be a nightmare!
So go to your stylist, they know your hair, they know what salon products were used on your hair at your last appointment, and they can choose something to suit your lifestyle. You will save a lot of money when talking directly with your stylist.
Next, look for products that are safe. Something that is parabon free, sulphate free, and something with uv protection is a great place to start. We carry Redken products at our salon, Hair Creations, they have a variety of shampoo and conditioner sets that are great for your hair. Another amazing product to try right now is Olaplex it allows you to take your hair colour to the next level without the usual damage. So go and talk with your stylist they will make sure you have nutrient rich, healthy hair!
