Heck Yes! Balayage!

We’ve been on board with ombre hair and its many variations for a long time now we’re always on the look out for a new take on the trend. Have you heard one of our stylists talk about “balayage,” that’s when we suggest you perk up — it’s the hair color trend to try.

Balayage is o of the most searched words on google right now!

What is balayage?

Balayage is a French free-handed highlighting technique (be gone traditional foiling techniques) that will make you look perfectly sun-kissed, like a subtle, blended ombre. Who isn’t down for that?

The best part? It lets your stylist release her inner artist, so she can totally personalize the colours and placement for you.

The appeal?

You can achieve so many different effects from soft, natural highlights to something strong and punky. It’s super low maintenance too! Because of the way the colour is applied there won’t be a harsh line of regrowth.

How it’s done.

The process varies depending on the length of your hair and your desired result. What you can usually expect is to have individual strands coloured with a brush. The strands chosen are determined by your stylist to create a super flattering look for you!

We find that all of our balayage clients are going for different looks and need to maintain those looks at different rates. Initially you may need multiple appointments to really build up your colour (colour takes time for happy, healthy hair!). If you’re going to extend your appointment because you like the way your regrowth is blending then we suggest coming in for a toner and a treatment to freshen up your colour in between appointments

Is it for me?

If you want more of a carefree colour, then this could be the look for your next appointment!

There are many different techniques that people use to create this look. It really depends on your hair type and colour history. If you’re seeing one of us we will be able to come up with a technique to achieve the look you desire that best suits your hair type and colour history. But it can take a few appointments because we want to do whats best for your hair.

There are certain hairstyles that show off balayage. I always love to see balayage finished with loose curls or a beachy, tousled look where you can see the colour variations ribbon through the hair. Sharp, strong haircuts like a bob require a stronger colour or a block colour to show off the cut. But balayage can be personalized by your stylist to work for you, that’s why its so amazing!

What We’re Loving Right Now

Do you ever wake up and your hair is just a little bit too messy to work with. You can’t wear it completely down or you don’t want to wear a messy pony tail or braid AGAIN!

I sure do! I get bored of those quick and easy looks.

I have a solution!

The half up top knot.

It works great for almost any hair length and type, as long as your hair is long enough to pull back into an elastic. This trendy style also looks great with straight, wavy, or curly hair. No matter your hair type, everyone is covered! And you can style this do in many ways, a neat and sleek pulled back top knot or a romantic and carefree look. The look you go for will make this style work for your occasion!

CC Creme

We’ve decided to do a product review on one of our favourite new products of the season!

Firstly, what is BB & CC…BB is a beauty balm and CC is a colour corrector.

Truthfully, we could all use a bit of colour correction to balance our skin. That’s where the Mirabella CC Creme comes in!

The creme comes in three shades which are so easy to match up to different skin tones:

The creme has worked really well on my combination (dry and oily) skin. It has bamboo water and avocado oil for skin hydration and improvement. It balances out with witch hazel for oil control on your face. So whether you have dry skin, oily skin or combination skin, CC Creme can work so great for you! It also has anti aging benefits from acai berry and SPF 20 for skin protection, we will be looking fantastic for years to come! (

You can use it as a very light foundation when applying it with your fingertips or apply a heavier coat with a brush depending on how much or how little you want to cover up, I like using a brush. The creme blends really well with my skin because it is not heavy and does not smudge or wipe off throughout the day. I love it! I like to team the CC Creme up with Mirabella’s mineral based Conceal to cover up blemishes and the Pure Press to set the makeup. Then I like to finish my skin off with Mirabella’s Face Highlighter on the ball of my cheek with the brighter pink shade and the darker bronze under my cheek bone. This gives my cheeks the perfect pop of colour while adding contour and giving my face more shape. And VOILA you’ve got a great everyday skin look!

Steps 1-4:

Balayage vs. Ombre

First of all what the heck is balayage?
The balayage hair technique is when a skilled stylist sweeps a colour that is 2-3 shades lighter than your all over colour. It creates a beautiful subtle sun kissed look.

Another gorgeous technique is ombre. This is a gradient of colour from root to tip of the hair. Depending on the technique and how light you want to go can create a subtle to striking look. You decide!

So how do you choose which look you want?
Here are a few questions to ask yourself….
Do I want a low maintenance colour?
How light do I want to go?
How do I usually style my hair?

ps. Your stylist will ask you at least some of these questions, so be prepared! At Hair Creations we provide really helpful consultations that will help you choose the look that will most compliment your hair type, face shape and lifestyle.

Why am I asking you these questions?

Depending on which technique you and your stylist decide will determine how much up-keep you will have to maintain your hair. Balayage and a subtle ombre will be the lowest maintenance, I guarantee it!! Because the colour you are applying to your hair is not extremely drastic you can allow it to further grow out and you wont see a strong line because of difference of colour.

Another sidenote, during our consultations we determine how much stress your hair can handle. By this I mean the lighter you take your hair the more stress you will be putting on your hair. This is why it is so important that you are using professional hair products that have been recommended to you by your stylist.

And lastly…i’m almost done….a drastic ombre or balayage hair are complemented by different styling techniques. An ombre tends to look best with a wavy or curly style because if your ombre is drastic, from dark to light, there may be a subtle line of colour that can be better blended when putting a curl in your hair. Balayage can obviously be styled both ways, but it’s a safer straight look.

Both colouring techniques are really on trend right now so take a moment to think about which is best for you!
